The following is from John Evers, one of our bloggers: On March 6th, I will be giving a presentation at the Mount Airy City Council meeting at 7:00pm. The presentation is regarding the idea of Mount Airy starting a Youth Commission. I’ll explain more that night, but I strongly feel that this would be fantastic for both – The City of Mount Airy, as well as those youth who would serve on the Youth Commission. I believe it would be a win-win situation. The city would hear first-hand what is on the hearts and minds of our young people, and those teens would gain experience and knowledge of local government. Those youth will also learn from experience how to come up with solutions and how to present these plans to city leaders. I firmly believe that this would help develop not only leaders of tomorrow, but for today as well. Thanks for your help.
Sounds like a great idea to me! Any time you can provide an opportunity for young adults to invest their time and talents into something positive, how can you pass it up? I am thankful for the opportunities I had as a teen to serve on different committees. You can’t put a price on the experience and confidence that can be gained.
I think there are plenty of adults who wouldn’t know where to begin in planning an initiative, presenting it to the city council or implementing it once it is approved. Educating our children to have a working knowledge of the process is an excellent idea.
John, This is an excellent idea and it is certainly needed. As a Social Worker, I applaud your efforts. Keep up the good work.
Thank you all very much for your kind words. I truly believe this could prove to be a very positive thing, but I need your help. Please encourage teens to get involved and show their support in such a commission. Many of the teens in our community have much potential, BUT they need the encouragement and support from their parents and other adults in their lives such as teachers, pastors, managers, etc. Please help get the word out to them. This would be a great opportunity to have their voices heard and can be a positive experience for them. It would be a way for them to address the city regarding issues that are important to them…on an ongoing basis. Not just when a specific want arises. All I can do is suggest it. Without a showing from teens themselves, that a commission is wanted and needed, it will go nowhere.
I think John Evers has a good idea in trying to start this youth commission. It will give the teens and college and career age people something positive to do for the community and help them have a voice in one goes on.
I think this is a great idea. Our teens need something positive to get involved in.Some teens have very good attitudes and out look towards the future. And after all they will be the future. So I say yes go out and support this commission.
Speaking of youth…take a look at this. Make sure your speakers are turned up.
