Forcing ex offenders out of their homes and into limited"allowable" areas of our counties actually increases the risk of recidivism, rather than the opposite.

Sure it's feel-good legislation but there is no evidence to suggest that it works. Studies and common sense suggest the opposite effect. Displacing a person from his family, home, job and stable life would obviously decrease his stability in all areas of his life.

And these banishment laws have always baffled me from the beginning; aren't there cars and buses which can carry a dangerous person to a park or school? If someone wants to offend, do you really think 2000 feet will prevent it?

I think clyde9 brought up some very good points. I don't think anyone could disagree with the fact that there needs to be more work in Mount Airy. Tourism is okay, if there are plenty of other jobs available for the people as well. I often feel that those concerned with the $$$$ that tourism brings in, are for the most part the retired, those who work directly IN tourism and those who own a business. What about everyone else???

Please don't adopt the Andy Griffith theme song. Think about it. Is Andy Griffith going to be the theme for Surry County in 50 years? It's bad enough now.

The lottery "bait and switch" is only to be expected from a political nomenklatura that is willing to enact a "gambling education" project like the state lottery in the first place. Having trained large numbers of citizens to gamble at very poor odds, the state cultivates the public for involvement in privately arranged gambling opportunities with much smaller "house advantage". This is why private gambling interests are happy to see a state lottery: they know because of the profligacy of the state sponsors, it will always be easy to beat the state's gaming services in competing for the patronage of serious gamblers. And, they know that the state's pathetic offering will generate a lot more serious gamblers.

Of COURSE the funds extracted by the "education" lottery from the foolish and the population of compulsive gamblers will be diverted into the political game player's favorite projects! That's how the game is played. And that is how it will continue to be played as long as voters are inattentive and gullible enough to allow it.

I'm pretty sure I got that poll, and from what I remember it didn't strike me as well formed. I picked up the bias early on, asked a bunch of leading questions, and it forced people to take sides in their answers (all yes or no answers, no "unsure / don't know" option, and it didn't measure degrees of support/opposition)

Forcing me to pick between a vision of the area as heavy industry center or expanding on agriculture and tourism I'm going to go with the agriculture and tourism (like 80% of the other poll takers), but it doesn't mean I (or they) are steadfastly opposed to recruiting heavy industry. The fact is we need to diversify our economy, which means recruiting industry along side growing tourism and agriculture, and promoting small businesses.
