Time to get your thoughts on the Mount Airy City Commissioners races. The election is less than three weeks away. In the At-Large race, Scott Lowry and Deborah Cochran made it through the primary last week, and while Lowry led, it was close enough that there’s plenty of doubt. Let’s hear what you have to say about these two. And check out the entries for the other two races, too.

Airline angst

As I’m writing this I’m stuck in the airport in San Francisco. Our 9 a.m. flight was cancelled for “mechanical reasons.” I’m always a little antsy about getting onto the flight after “mechanical reasons.” I keep waiting for the pilot to say something like, “We’ll, we think we’ve got it fixed. What the hell, let’s give it a shot.” In this case we’re waiting for a flight to Las Vegas that will connect to Charlotte and then get us home about five hours later than planned. Then again, I just noticed that USScareways earlier flight to Las Vegas was cancelled. If I really wanted to go to Vegas and were a betting man, I’d say that the 40 minutes we have there between flights won’t be enough and we’ll get stuck there overnight.
Flying used to be fun. but now it’s a pain. We’ve had to go through security twice and rebook three times already today. Anyone else want to relay their horror stories about airline travel?

Medical Delay

Okay, so for the past two weeks I have put off going to the doctor for my headaches. Well, honestly, my whole life I have put off going to the doctor for my migraines. I just have an anti-doctor issue. I hate going unless it’s life threatening. So anyway, I finally broke down today and decided to call my doctor and set up an appointment. At which time I’m told that the soonest they can see me is next Friday. On one hand I’ve waited two weeks and it hasn’t killed me yet, but on the other, it’s bad enough that I’ve broken down and tried to get help and they can’t see me for nine days. I hate to wait that long but I also hate having to deal with changing doctors and filling out 30 pages worth of medical history. So should I just twiddle my thumbs, load up on aspirin, and wait? Or should I just try another doctor? Maybe give up completely and wait til I get over it or my head explodes? Any one else have similiarly exasperating experiences with doctors?

I’m a little hesitant to raise the subject of the Autumn Leaves Festival, given the can of worms that opened up when I asked about Mayberry Days. I’ve heard some people say that a lot of merchants don’t like Autumn Leaves, but it’s hard to argue with an event that brings in thousands of folks from out of town, hopefully spending their dollars here. What say you? Will you be going, or leaving, so to speak?

Next Tuesday we’ll have a pointless, expensive primary in Mount Airy. Three candidates are running for two nominations on the November general election ballot for city council. So the entire elections mechanism is being cranked up to eliminate one person. What a waste. Want to bet on what the voter turnout will be? Want to be optimistic and say 15 percent? Tell you what, respond with your prediction of voter turnout (in percentage) and we’ll award a Messenger t-shirt to the one who comes closest. I’ll need your predictions no later than when the polls open next Tuesday at 6:30 a.m.

Is Visitors Center DOA?

Uh oh. Looks like the visitors center project may be in deep . . . stuff, what with the construction bids being about twice as much as hoped for, and that’s without any of the nicer add-ons. It’s going to be tough politically to find three city commissioners willing to push forward with a project that has already caught so much flak. Any of you willing to come up with another $3-400,000 to make this dream a reality?
