We’re now about one week away from the deadline to register for the May primaries, and across the state March was a busy month for elections officials signing up new people to vote. During the most recent four-week period, there were 39,324 new registrations, of which 224 were from Surry County (weekly totals can be found here). I’m sure the contested presidential election was the main motivating factor, but there’s some other contested  races voters should pay attention to given their opportunity to weigh in right after checking off a presidential pick. North Carolina’s Democratic gubernatorial race is now neck and neck on the primary side between Richard Moore and Beverly Perdue. Closer to home, the Democratic spot on the ticket opposite Virginia Foxx to represent us in Congress is contested between Roy Carter and Diane Hamby. For those with a knee jerk reaction against campaign websites, you can always instead check out the Facebook profiles for Carter and Hamby. I love how the same website I once used to waste time in college is now a required part of every campaign.
